SummaryThe remote sensing satellite TerraSAR-X shall be used to demonstrate space based traffic monitoring. Innovative new SAR modes, processing algorithms as well as an upgrade of the operational ground segment will be developed. The project is conducted in close cooperation with the DLR Institute for Transportation Research IVF in Berlin. The research focus is not on traffic in urban areas but on motorways between the large European cities and border crossings. Furthermore a cooperation with local traffic control center is planned. For certain areas a near real time processing of the radar data to traffic information is planned. The develpment phase of the project is in 2006 and 2007. The operational phase is planned for 2008. A verification site with traditional road sensors is located in Berlin-adlershof near the IVF. The experience gained from this project shall be used to design new spaceborne SAR satellites which are optimized for the traffic monitoring application. The new TS-X Dual Receive Antenna (DRA)Mode is essential for the detection of moving objects and has to be used for the data acquisitions within this project.
