SummaryThe primary objective is the further development a software prototype for the generation of semi-automated land cover products developed within the DLR/BMBF Enviland project. The transferability of the algorithms developed for ERS-2 SAR and ENVISAT ASAR data to TerraSAR-X imagery shall be accomplished within this AO-proposal. A particular focus of the developments is the combination of SAR imagery with optical data in comparable resolution (e.g. HyMap, Quickbird, RapidEye). Several processing approaches (various filter, image fusion, segmentation, classification methods etc.) will be evaluated to develop a scale and sensor independent, stabile, economic efficient, highly automated and transferable classification scheme. The activities can be split in three main sections: - Temporal integration - Scale integration - Spatial integration In the module ‘temporal integration’ the focus will be on the determination of robust feature selection to separate land use classes in different levels of detail and on the derivation of biophysical parameters such as biomass or crop height. Therefore, time series of SAR data shall be analysed and combined with optical imagery. The module ‘scale integration’ shall systematically investigate the impacts of spatial resolution in the classification process. The module ‘spatial integration’ will comprise the integration of all research results into the software prototype. The novel toolbox shall enable automated sensor calibration and orthorectification of SAR as well as an image to image registration of optical and SAR data. In subsequent steps automated, scale-independent land cover products such as land use/cover maps in different levels of details shall be produced for multi-temporal satellite data. If possible also a component on biophysical parameters will be added.
