Summary1. Objectives The work aims at mapping forest biomass by mapping tree height, tree density, species composition from TerraSAR-X data to support forest managers, the scientific land surface and climate modelling community and evaluate the use for the Kyoto protocol verification. 2. Methods It is known from previous research that tree density and tree height can be used to improve aboveground biomass estimation. Tree density will be estimated from the spatial texture information in the SpotLight mode data. Density affects the spatial texture of a forest stand at high enough spatial resolution. Tree height will be derived from SpotLight INSAR data at stand level. Biomass will be derived using forest structural model relationships from coherent microwave and tree structural modelling results to relate biomass to tree density and height. 3.
