SummaryThe objective of the proposed study is to carry out feasibility evaluation of TerraSAR-X images in new potential application areas of agriculture (precision farming), forestry (tree species classification) and map updating. Test areas are Seinäjoki, Sjökulla and Kivenlahti. The city of Seinäjoki is located in the southern/western Finland, where the FGI has researched agricultural applications since 1996 using satellite SAR images (ERS-1, Radarsat-1 and Envisat). Forestry and map updating studies will be carried out in Southern Finland near Helsinki city. The FGI has extensive reference data (for example parcel map, aerial images, laser scanning data, existing maps) from all of the test areas and is capable to carry out new field survey campaigns using wide-ranging experience and equipment.
The duration of the proposed study is from January 2007 to December 2008. Each SAR image will be pre-processed as soon as they are received by the FGI. Data analysis in more detail will be carried out during the project, namely, after each agricultural growing season (2007 and 2008), using leaf-on and leaf-off period images and continuously in urban areas. Final results will be summarized in autumn 2008. Data will be analyzed using multitemporal image sets; regression analysis techniques to evaluate the crop growth monitoring using Stripmap TerraSAR-X images. Stripmap TerraSAR-X images from leaf-on and leaf-off periods will be used to detect tree species proportion and results will be verified using GIS forest inventory data. Urban mapping and map updating will be carried out using knowledge based image interpretation methods. Existing maps and laser scanning data integrated with digital aerial images will be used as reference data.
Altogether, the data requirement of the proposed study is 28 images. Stripmap products are planned to be used in the agricultural and forestry studies. In urban mapping and map updating study high resolution Spotlight product are required.
Anticipated result is the feasibility of TerraSAR-X for producing crop productivity maps, classifying tree species, detecting mature forest stands, updating maps and detecting changed urban areas. Achieved results will be presented in the international conferences, and published in the international peer-reviewed journals. All team members also give lectures in the Helsinki University of Technology, where results will be used as lecture material for graduate and post-graduate students.
The funding of the proposed project will be covered by FGI (50%) and the National Technology Agency of Finland (50%). The funding of the FGI has already been confirmed for the project.
