Introduction and objectives:
In the hydrological context precise knowledge of the agricultural crops is important for several issues. For dynamic large scale hydrological modeling, e.g. for the support of N-fertilisation and N-leaching current data of the crops, the soil-water conditions etc. is very important.
The data shall also be used for Precision Farming (PF) issues. With the help of multitemporal and multi polarized data the biomass and crop height development shall be examined and modelled. Due to the changes in the backscqattering properties due to the incidence angles, the phenology, the moisture content etc. of the crops many problems have to be solved. Here there is a strong research demand, especially with multipolarized X-band data.
1. Multitemporal multipolarized object oriented classification to separate different agricultural crops, because in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 70 – 85 % of the land use is agriculture.
2. Determiantion of geo- and biophysical parameters, such a biomass, crop height etc. One way to go will be the examination of texture information and the incorporation of multipolarized data. Beside empirical relations also systematically errors shall be investigated. 3. The results of the radar remote sensing shall be compared with PFIFF, a low-cost optical digital airborne system.
Deliverables and data integration:
The determined parameters (e.g. crop type, biomass, crop height) shall be used for a set of different hydrological models and the expert system MINERVA. Furthermore the site specific variability parameters will be determined.
Data requirements:
Continuous data coverage in the for the time frame 1.2.2007 – 31.09.2008 in the Strip-Map mode with 3 m ground resolution in quad polarization.
explanatory statement: The SAR-Data shall be available with the beginning of the vegetation period 2007/2008, with presumably saturated soil water properties. For the examination of the interannual changes and for verification of the model monitoring over two vegetation periods is necessary. The end of the data collection will be the end of the hydrological year 2008.
