SummaryLarge area forest and natural resource information is required by many international conventions and processes. In the tropics, data provision in the field is extremely difficult and costly. Because of cloud cover, remote sensing integration into those forest inventories is difficult. It is ongoing research of many teams to improve the corresponding information provision techniques. On two test sites in Costa Rica, in a fragmented and ondulated terrain, the suitability of TerraSAR-X data to support field forest inventories will be tested. It is expected that TerraSAR-X data, when readily available, will improve the estimation of important indicators of natural resources sustainability, such as forest area, forest type area, forest fragmentation, forest structure and biomass.
