SummaryThe proposal is focused on the use of TerraSAR-X data to measure surface deformation through SAR Interferometry (InSAR) techniques and to detect surface changes in urban areas, and to the comparison with COSMO-SkyMed data in the selected test sites. Surface displacements can be related to natural disasters, so as changes in urban areas. For sake of simplicity the proposal is addressed to properly investigate the surface expression of moderate to strong earthquakes. The use of InSAR technique to detect and measure the surface movements is nowadays a very common issue. InSAR has been applied to C-Band and L-Band SAR systems leading to reliable results since 1992. The novelty is now the VHR data, the capability to potentially measure very short displacements thanks to the X-Band SAR, the availability of a large number of images in a short time interval. Last april 6th, 2009, a Mw 6.3 earthquake hit the Abruzzi region provoking strong damage in the capital of the province, L’Aquila, and in a large number of medium or small villages around. Satellite images have been made available soon after the seism to investigate the effects, deformation and damages, to rapidly obtain a picture of the whole hit area. The availability of COSMO-SkyMed data thanks to the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Department of Civil Protection (DPC) allowed computing the first interferogram showing a large feature of differential fringes. The availability of a further VHR SAR mission, TerraSAR-X, make necessary to investigate the properties of both systems and to test the possibility of a combined use and a direct comparison among the derived products.
