SummaryThe reservoir of Buruli ulcer is still unknown. The objective of the project is the identification of environmental reservoirs and transmission pathways of Mycobacterium ulcerans, the causative agent of Buruli ulcer by genetic fine typing of disease isolates and analysis of geographical distribution patterns. Differentiation of M. ulcerans isolates of the same geographic region in ground truth missions in Ghana represents a break-through in research on the molecular epidemiology of M. ulcerans and delivers an excellent ground truth data base for the correlation and statistical evaluations together with satellite derived information. In a next step the project team now wants to correlate the observed geographical distribution pattern of the genetic variants of the pathogen with the spatial distribution of environmental features derived from sattelite data. Identification of correlations between environmental features and spread of variants of the pathogen may lead to the identification of environmental reservoirs. This may in turn allow identifying avoidable risks for infection.
