SummaryOur team deals with SAR data obtained by airborne multi-frequency polarimetric SAR system IMARC in X, L, P and VHF bands. The flights were conducted over several regions in European part of Russia. The regions are characterized by the variety of natural and man-made objects, which makes it attractive for analysis and interpretation. Obtaining of high-resolution TerraSAR-X data acquired in various seasons would help us in the analysis of multi-frequency IMARC data. Our objectives include the following:
  • Tracing of seasonal changes in backscattering of soil and vegetation; comparison of seasonal changes depending on wavelength and polarization; explanation of mechanisms of seasonal changes;
  • The study of wetness effect on forest backscattering;
  • Comparison and analysis of TerraSAR-X data in conjunction with our L, P and VHF data;
  • Conducting of ground-based measurements in the regions of radar survey;
  • Conducting of additional calibration by means of corner reflectors

The methods of investigation include:
  • Correlation of ground based measurements with radar survey results;
  • Modeling of backscattering from various natural objects (forest, ground);
  • Using of ground-based measurements in the theoretical calculations and comparison of the results with experimental (SAR) data.

  • Results of the work will be described in the report and forwarded to the interested organizations.
    The work will be carried out in the framework of ISTC project #2866 “Application of multi-frequency polarimetric SAR at decimeter (L, P) and meter (VHF) bands for surface and subsurface sensing of soils and vegetation cover”.
