SummaryThis proposal seeks to acquire TerraSAR-X synthetic aperture radar image and interferometric data during the 2007/2009 International Polar Year (IPY). The primary scientific objective is to obtain high-resolution, repeat pass SAR data for measuring surface velocity. The data will be compared with earlier ERS Tandem and RADARSAT Antarctic Mapping Project (RAMP) data sets including the Antarctic Mapping Mission 1 (1997), the Modified Antarctic Mapping Mission (2000), and the limited follow-on study in 2004. The X-band observations will also be compared with L- and C-band data also being planned for acquisition during the IPY. The new observations will be compared to the earlier data sets to measure changes in ice sheet mass balance and dynamics. Within IPY objectives, these data will benchmark the physical characteristics and behaviour the Antarctic Ice Sheet as called for under the IPY approved GIIPSY umbrella proposal.
