SummaryA large percentage of high latitude lands are underlain by the frozen soil layer called permafrost. Permafrost is subject to seasonal elevation change due to thaw and freezing of its top layer, called active layer, as well as permafrost degradation caused by climate change. The estimation of elevation change and its temporal and spatial variability plays an important role in understanding the characteristics of permafrost and its active layer. We propose to use TerraSAR-X in permafrost landscapes in Alaska and Lena delta to estimate spatio-temporal pattern of elevation change. Then, we investigate the link between elevation change and landscape features and land cover. InSAR subsidence results from TerraSAR-X, in conjunction with results from other L-band and C-band sensors, will be used as input to infer spatial variations of active layer thickness in the area. The results will be validated using in-situ measurements.
