SummaryThis project is to support the big efforts currently made to use the German Bight for energy production employing the offshore wind farming technology.
Behind offshore wind turbines there is a wake area in which the wind speed is reduced, the turbulence is increased and exchange processes between the atmosphere and the ocean are modified. Our knowledge about the size and shape of wakes behind entire offshore wind farms is still limited. There are strong indications however that the power yield can be significantly reduced in particular in stable atmospheric conditions. Apart from the implications for the power production also the impact on the local climate is still under discussion. With the growing number of windturbines in the German Bight these issues are of growing importance and are subject of the proposed research.
The project has the following objectives
  • To apply, validate and optimise numerical and analytical models for the simulation of offshorewind farm far field effects
  • To observe offshore windfarm far field effects using a combination of satellite, insitu, and airborne data
  • Provide information required for an efficient development of offshore windfarming in the German Bight

The work shall be conducted in cooperation with the following partners
  • Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Institut für Meteorologie und Klimaforschung, Garmisch-Partenkirchen (IMK-IFU des KIT)
  • Technische Universität Braunschweig, Institut für Flugführung, Braunschweig (TU BS)
