SummaryIn northern China, the problems of ground subsidence induced by mining activities have caused widely attention in recent years. With large-scale of coal exploitation in some mining areas in the North China and the Northwest China, the natural ecological environment has been seriously destroyed at the same time,which might result in small regional-scale subsidence in surrounding regions, and even more serious cases in some environmental geological hazards, includingsoil erosion, ground fissure, mine collapse, and seismicity. In 2012, due to the underground mining development, the mined goaf area has increased about 70-80km2, 18 destructive mine earthquakes have occurred, and the underground water level has already dropped below 16 meter, only in Yulin Cityin Shaanxi Province. All of these land subsidence or deformation events will be able to damage the surrounding buildings, roads and underground pipelines normally, consequently affect the daily life of surrounding residents and the development of coal-mining industries. In this project, we propose to use the high resolution TerraSAR-X data as a primary dataset, to monitor the ground subsidence associated with mining activities in two major coal-mining areas in northern China. This project will mainly be carried out in Handan-Fengfeng mining area in Hebei Province, based on some multi-temporal InSAR methods, such as PS-InSAR, SBAS, DS-InSAR, and TCP-InSAR. As a comparison, we also propose to study the subsidence monitoring performance of high resolution TerraSAR-X data in another area with different land coverage types, Shenfu-Dongsheng miningarea. Research objectives of this project can be divided into three categories:(1) studying the performance of different techniques in monitoring of the mining-induced ground subsidence, (2) developing strategies of multi-sourcedata fusion and key techniques of mining subsidence information extraction, (3) analyzing mechanism of the mining-induced subsidence in Handan-Fengfeng mining area in both time and space. After the project accomplished, a number of deliverables will be produced as follows: (1) constructing a zone of application and demonstration of coal mining-induced subsidence monitoring in Handan-Fengfeng mining area, (2) generating the mining-induced subsidence distribution maps, time series subsidence maps, and subsidence rate maps over Handan-Fengfeng mining area, using some integrated approaches based on multi-source data, (3) writing acomprehensive research report outlining all relevant methods and all monitoring results, (4) publishing papers in scientific journals, (5) proposing an industry standard of coal mining-induced monitoring technologies for National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation of China. A related project, entitled “Resource development-induced subsidence monitoring in serving of the geographic national condition monitoring in China”, is supported in area of Handan-Fengfengmining region by a special fund for public projects of National Administrationof Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation of China (201412016), 2014-2015, 1,230,000.
