SummaryThe April1, 2014, Mw8.2 megathrust earthquake struck the north region of Chile. Despite the great magnitude of this event, the area affected did not show significant structural damage and the recorded ground motions showed only moderate accelerations. We propose to use InSAR processing to study the characteristics of the faulting mechanism, using the coseismic deformations produced. This research aims to understand why there was apparently little damage on identical building structures that were severely damaged during the previous 2010, Maule, earthquake. The methodology will be to compare the rupture model thus determined with the rupture model estimated for the Maule event, and presented elsewhere (Fortuño et al., BSSA in press).
