SummaryThe two-year project “Copernicus service in support of geohazard assessment and regional planning in the region Rhine-Moselle”, started by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and the State Authority for Geology and Mining of Rhineland-Palatinate (LGB) is part of the national Copernicus development programme in Germany. The project is funded by DLR Space Administration (DLR RFM) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi, FKZ 50 EE 1311).
The aim of the project is to develop and test a Copernicus Service for geohazard assessment and regional planning in Rhineland-Palatinate, in order tosupport public tasks. PSI-processing of historic ERS-1/-2 and Envisat-ASAR data in the region Rhine-Moselle was conducted. Based on the ground motion data, two study areas are selected for further detailed geohazard analysis. The first test area is located in the town Mendig, where historic extensive near-surface underground basalt mining leads to subsidence and sinkholes. In the second study area, along the Moselle Valley between Cochem and Bernkastel-Kues, landslide areas are investigated. These detailed ground motion analysis are based on PSI- and SBAS-processing of TerraSAR-X StripMap data of ascending and descending orbits.
