SummaryThe applicability of TerraSAR-X data to permafrost-related research in high-latitude tundra regions will be investigated. Permafrost-related applications are the detection, mapping and monitoring of disturbances in topography, vegetation and snow cover, lateral and vertical displacements and surface change detection in permafrost landscapes. The proposed project covers the topics polar research, relating to mapping, monitoring and change detection of land cover & vegetation, water resources & hydrology. Disturbances, erosion, creeping, subsidence, hydrological, freezing and thawing processes and lake change are indicators for the state of the sub-ground permafrost. The activities will contribute to the scientific evaluation of TerraSAR-X data. The proposed regions for the extention of LAN1747 are Herschel Island (Canada), the Lena Delta in the Laptev Sea Region (Siberia) and Abisko, Sweden. These sites are long-term monitored and well investigated on ground by the international circumpolar Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN-P) monitoring program ( the International Permafrost Association (IPA) ( GTN-programm provides stations with continuous measurements of temperature(air, soil, borehole) and grids of active layer and moisture measurements (late summer) together with meta data (site description, photos, vegetation, soils,elevation). The involved teams have established expedition-related monitoring programs in Siberia, Alaska and Canada. The investigators are grouped in research groups that work at the subtasks, such as lake change detection, mapping and monitoring of disturbances and erosion. The team will link ground data and its expert knowledge to advance the understanding of the radar signal and processed parameters. The research will extend previous investigations with optical satellite data and other wavelength and spatial resolution radar (SAR and scatterometer) analyses. Especially the higher spatial resolution of TerraSAR-X is expected to yield new information of the regions of interest and thus enable innovation. Analyses are based on stripmap and scansar mode acquisitions available in the archive and will include mapping of landcover, surface water and surface moisture, detection of changes and disturbances. A publication (covereing also LAN1747) for each of the sub-tasks is foreseen as deliverable.
