SummaryWith the help of dual polarized high-resolution TerraSAR-X SM data, we will monitor the water surface areas of lake Fürstenseer See, near Neustrelitz (Germany). The study includes a long-term monitoring via TerraSAR-XSAR imagery (HYD1731) and a complementary analysis of dual-polarized data to improve the monitoring of water surface areas and changing shorelines. The analysis of seasonal variations of the water surface area and the shoreline is important of the understanding of the hydrological year and for the understanding of long-term water surface area changes. Large incidence angles and single HH polarization are preferred for water detection, but dual polarization data offer better potential in the analysis through the decomposition of different backscatter types. Our investigations are part of the joint ICLEA project (Integrated Climate and Landscape Evolution Analyses), which is funded by the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres Initiative - Networking Fund for funding a Helmholtz Virtual Institute.
