Unfortunately, those DB are mainly acquired and updated byphoto-interpretation. This operation is very long and expensiveespecially when user requirements encourage the upgrading of LC-DB atleast every year. In this context, remote sensing data appear verypromising. TheFrench National Mapping Agency (IGN) , in charge of physicallydescribing the French territory, is the main provider of up-to-datedata concerning vegetation. One of the recent assignments given tothe IGN is to build a large-scale land cover database. This projectin currently in the production phase, and uses photo-interpretationas well as ground data and existing databases. Research is nowfocused on accomplishing automatic and efficient updating of thisland cover database. Up until now only multi-spectral andhyper-spectral data are being tested to complete this task. Thestudy area is located near the city of Tarbes, in the Midi-Pyrénéesregion, France. This area has been selected by IGN to be a testregion. Consequently, (1) the first productions at such nationallarge scale LC-DB will be evaluated over this site, and (2) numerousoptical spaceborne acquisitions are realized by Pleiades sensors. Thepresent proposal aims to complete these acquisitions with radarimages, in order to assess their contribution for land coverestimation. The complementarity between C and X bands will be alsoinvestigated as a fully polarimetric acquisition has been realizedthe 8thof April by the RADARSAT-2 sensor. Resultswill be validated by their comparison with both photo-interpretationdata and in-situdata acquired during ground surveys.
