TitleAnalysis of TerraSAR-X data for derivation of flood masks and environmental mapping for the Dongting lake in China

SummaryThe goals of the DONGTING project are to foster an improved management of the lake’s water resources, providing information and remediation concepts to support stakeholders on their pathway to improve water security, water quality, resource management and outreach. DONGTING will contribute via detailed analyses of the lake’s environment at different scale (earth observation, in-situ), including water sample analyses, organic material sampling, household surveying, pollution source assessment, prognostic modelling of pollution pathways, conceptual design of remediation and adaptation measures, e.g. including concepts for water treatment plants, as well as training, capacity building, scientific exchange, and especially cross fertilization of industry, science and stakeholder between two extensive consortia (esp. China) shall support this contribution. The applied scientific focus will be on the exploitation of earth observation data to deliver relevant input parameters for the partner’s prognostic modelling applications. These include up to date landcover and landuse maps of the lake’s basin based on high resolution remote sensing data, the delivery of inundation frequency products based on > 30 years of Landsat time series data, the provision of a TanDEM X digital elevation model (when available), the derivation of data on net primary productivity in the region (including biomass as tons of carbon for agricultural areas), the derivation of large area flood masks in the dry and the rainy season, as well as the derivation of urban settlement masks from high resolution radar data, and the visualization of changes in urbanization during the time-frame of the project. These products will be delivered at a resolution ranging from 30, to up to 1m, and will be shared with the partners for modelling purposes or the generation of value added further products. Sensor data that will be utilized for these tasks includes Ikonos, RapidEye, Spot, Landsat, TerraSAR-X, Envisat ASAR, MODIS data. The information products produced will be validated in the field, which will be jointly undertaken with the Chinese partners. Contextual research will focus on the wetland areas of Dongting Lake – especially in the three study areas: the Dongting Lake Nature Reserve in the North of East Dongting Lake, the wetlands North, East and West of the city of Yuanjiang, and the wetlands close to Yueyang. Here the following water-quality relevant topics will be addressed jointly with the involved Chinese partners and affected stakeholder: Wetland deterioration due to the invasive introduction of foreign species (e.g. poplars for pulp production for the paper mills). It will be investigated how far poplar progression has advanced into Asia’s largest reed belt, how many of the water-purifying wetlands have been destroyed, how much of the reed areas are under commercial usage (harvesting for paper mills), and how wetland composition and fragmentation has changed over time.
