SummaryWithin the DELIGHT research project an inter- and trans-disciplinary information system for the support of the “Integrated water, land and costal resource management” within the Yellow River Delta will be developed and implemented for five already identified users of the region, who are already closely involved in the project preparation. The research includes the evaluation of TerraSAR-X data for high resolution flood, inundation frequency, wetland and habitat fragmentation mapping in the Yellow River Delta, China Objectives for TerraSAR-X analyses are i) the regular mapping of all inundated areas in the Yellow River Delta. Thereby, naturally inundated areas (due to the intrusion of coastal water, precipitation, bursting of dikes) will be distinguished from artificial, intentionally inundated areas (aquaculture, salt panes), Since these products have to be generated with high temporal frequency, automated algorithms will be employed. These algorithms will be further developed in respect to the processing of mass data and the differentiation of natural and artificial inundated areas, in the context of the DELIGHT project, ii) the generation of products highlighting the inundation frequency (number of floods of an area), iii) In the case of an available LIDAR based terrain model or a high resolution DEM from satellite data (e.g. terrain model with 1m resolution of the German TerraSAR-X / TanDEM-X Mission towards the end of the first DELIGHT project phase), it will also be possible to derive the inundation depth of the water surfaces, iv) The TerraSAR-X data will also be analysed regarding their suitability for wetland and habitat fragmentation mapping in the Yellow River Delta. Final products shall be jointly validated by the Chinese and German partners in the context of large-scale field campaigns. Deliverables will include water masks and information products that indicate the current flood situation in the Yellow River Delta, as well as the inundation frequency. Terra-SAR-X data will also support mapping of natural and artificial wetlands in the delta, and habitat fragmentation.
