SummaryThis research is aimed at improved processing of SAR data for the monitoring of geo-hazards associated with surface deformations. A comprehensive in-depth validation of the applicability of TerraSAR-X data for large scale observation is a key subject. The existing processing methods will be adopted to meet the increased requirements. Generally, this data proposal is to support research in the field of method development and optimization. With respect to large scale observation and the forthcoming generation of SAR-Satellites it is central to the project to optimize the joint processing of adjacent tracks. At the same time there is a need to improve the approaches in controlling error propagation. Due to the advantages of high temporal and spatial resolution of TerraSAR-X data, this project targets to perform detailed deformation monitoring in subsidence affected areas. By applying repeat-pass interferometry, large-scale deformation of the surface of the Earth will be detected and monitored with high level of accuracy. The deliverables of the project includes the development of improved processing strategies as well as the detection of ongoing surface deformations and hazard zone / risk maps of the study area. One important task in this project will be an intensive scientific evaluation of improved combinations of processing methods using specifically developed, GIS-based postprocessing-software tools. Furthermore, the potential of the coupling of GNSS or other geodetic measurements with advanced PSInSAR-evaluations will be pointed out and examined exemplarily. An additional aim is to investigate whether the processing performance and error propagation can be improved by the use of multiple reference points. The TerraSAR-X data serve as a basis for pioneering processing chains adapted to the needs of future radar sensors. When Sentinel-1A/1B-data are available, the new developed methods will be adopted. This data proposal is determined to support the research project „Entwicklung einer Multi-Referenzpunkt-Netz- basierten Auswertemethode zur großräumigen Detektion von Bodenbewegungen mit Sentinel-1 und TerraSAR-X“ (Aug. 2012 – July 2015) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). The Space Administration of the German Aerospace Center, DLR, is acting as project manager and sponsor (funding code 50EE1203).
