SummaryThe southern area of Xinjiang is an earthquake prone area. Since 2011, more than 200 earthquakes occurred in Xinjiang, making it an important area for research. Xinjiang is very well suited for InSAR analysis, because the atmosphere is rather dry and the vegetation is sparse in our test area. We will setup GPS stations and corner reflectors in the area to support the analysis and also for validation of the results derived from the SAR analysis. Several deformation measurement techniques will be used, mainly PS-InSAR, QPS, and SBAS. To get a better estimation of the surface deformation velocity & direction, we intend using two cross-heading stacks and fuse the results. Additionally, with ScanSAR data we will get a larger coverage over the test area. We will try to acquire co-seismic pairs over the extended ScanSAR test area, to cover a larger area and increase the probability of acquiring a good co-seismic pair. By combining the deformation measurements, the available knowledge on the geology, and the seismic measurements, a geophysical deformation model will be developed. The model itself can then support the SAR time-series processing, giving a better estimation of the non-linear deformations. Working in an interdisciplinary team like proposed here, is often difficult. In this work we therefore also emphasize the importance of good visualization tools, which can provide access to results even for non-experts. To promote this interesting research topic, the Department of Space Microwave Remote Sensing System, Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS) will fund this project with 2.1 Million RMB (approximately 250,000) for hardware (e.g., GPS-Receivers and Corner Reflectors), and to support the travel and accommodation costs for the whole researcher group to Xinjiang.
