SummaryThe ultimate objective of this proposal is to improve the efficiency and accuracy of methods on crop identification with high resolution optical data and multi-frequency SAR data. We focus on developing a new crop identification method based on multi-source images without ground survey. For crop identification, our proposal is aiming to identify key distinguish features to discriminate different crop combinations, such as chlorophyll content and Nitrogen content in canopy, using multi-source images, and then use these unique features to distinguish different crop combinations. We want to analysis unique feature of different crop types. Based on different crop combinations, we will choose different features to indentify different crops. To reach our objective, we will collect supporting data in the study areas, such as crop maps, ground observation data, analyze the discriminative characters of different crops. We choose two experiment areas under the framework of JECAM as the study areas. Oneis Yucheng in Shandong province of China,and the other is Hongxing Farm in Heilongjiang province of China. Our study is requesting a total of 24 images over two years and two study sites. The images include StripMode dual polarization, ScanSAR images and a limited number of full polarimetric images.The research team also expects to access Radarsat-2, and Envisat ASAR over the same study sites described in this proposal, as well as some optical images, such as Worldview-2 and Rapideye. This research will produce a preliminary and final report on research findings and the performance of TerraSAR-X for crop identification, as well as conference papers, presentations and journal publications. Our study is funded by the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 program: Key techniques in quantification of major crops with remote sensing) and GEO Joint Experiment for Crop Assessment and Monitoring (JECAM).
