SummaryRailway transportation of goods is a CO2-efficient alternative to air freight and much faster than sea freight. However, the railway system is currently subject to delays caused by crime, natural disasters, de-centralized planning etc. The goal of this project is to identify and monitor critical segments of the railway system with different methods such as remote sensing, electro-mechanical sensors and small dedicated communication satellites. For example, seasonal thermal changes lead to strain on buildings and infrastructure. It has been shown that monitoring these small changes is an excellent application for TerraSAR-X data. In the framework of this proposal we will not only monitor buildings, but also rail tracks and combine the results with GPS and tri-axial acceleration data acquired by project partners. This data will be measured directly at the rolling freight cars. The combination of this different information will demonstrate the capability of TerraSAR-X mission to contribute to an efficient and safe transportation of good and even people.
