SummaryThe Joint Experiment for Crop Assessment andMonitoring (JECAM) initiative aims to generate a network of experiments oncropland pilot sites around the world representing main agricultural systems.It will facilitate the inter-comparisson of crop monitoring and modellingmethodologies among participants. In this project we present the JECAM test siteof Argentina.Our main objective is to evaluate the use of RADAR images in addition tooptical data for the estimation of crop growth parameters and its environmentalcondition, identification of crop type, tillage systems and phenologicalstages. For this purpose we perform intensive field measurements of crop growthparameters (crop biomass, crop water content, fAPAR, LAI) and environmentalvariables (soil moisture) in simultaneous with acqusitions from multiplesensors (including optical and RADAR). Additionally in situ identification ofland use, tillage system and phenological stages is performed at regionalscale. We request the acquisition of TerraSAR X images during the growth periodand key stages of main crops near in time of field measurements. Weparticularly seek to advance current knowledge on the relationship betweenmicrowaves and extensive crops biophysical variables. Inside JECAM, it isexpected to generate a convergence of approaches to define best monitoringpractices for different agricultural systems and identify requirements forfuture Earth Observation missions for agricultural monitoring. Funding for theimplementation of our field campaigns is supported by local financed projects.
