Summary

Information on extent and characteristics of seasonal snow cover is an important parameter in hydrological modelling and melting snow runoff predictions. There is a Ph.D. project called Snow cover monitoring using radar data for forested areas in the Czech Republic (no. 439911) supported by funding from the Charles University Grant Agency. The project started this year but it is a continuation of our previous work in master degree and under ESA PECS project FLOREO (Demonstration of ESA environments in support to FLOod Risk Earth Observation monitoring). In previous work there were examined 28 scenes of ASAR and also three scenes of TerraSAR-X.

In this project the feasibility of SAR data for detection of snow cover focusing on the vegetated areas, especially forest, in the Czech Republic will be investigated. There will be carried out in-situ measurements of snow cover characteristics during the acquisition day in cooperation with the Department of Physical Geography and Geoecology.

From sensor TerraSAR-X we plan to acquire 3 scenes in SSC format. The DEM of study area will be created with the intention to detect vegetation. The results will be used in consequent processing of MGD data in order to detect snow cover. Also we will apply D-InSAR approach on 3 scenes in SSC format in order to obtain information about snow cover in non-vegetated areas. The rest of images (7 scenes in MGD format) acquired between December 2011 and the end of March 2012 will be processed by using rationing of two images in order to detect snow cover both in vegetated and in non-vegetated areas. We plan to acquire all images for each study area (site 1 or 2) from the same track, using the same image mode (STRIPMAP is preferred), polarization VV and the same incidence angle (preferably about 25-35 degrees).

Funding: Jana Souckova is a principal investigator of the project Snow cover monitoring using radar data for forested areas in the Czech Republic (no. 439911) supported by the Grant Agency of Charles University in Prague. The CU Grant Agency supports students' scientific and research work, especially at doctoral level. For the data purchase project disposes of 2000 euro for the year 2011, which must be spent until December 2011.The support of this research should continue from the CU Grant Agency in the next year.
