SummaryDuring the past five decades, intensive exploitation of water resources, mainly by agricultural water consumption, has changed the temporal and spatial distribution of water resources and has caused serious environmental problems in the Tarim river basin. The ecosystems as well the ecological processes dominated by natural vegetation are seriously impacted by water diversions for irrigation purposes. The SuMaRiO cluster (Sustainable Management of River Oases along the Tarim River / China) aims to contribute to a sustainable land management which explicitly takes into account ecosystem functions and ecosystem services. In a transdisciplinary research process, SuMaRiO will identify realizable management strategies, considering social, economic and ecological criteria. This will have positive effects for nearly 10 million inhabitants of different ethnic groups. For the natural ecosystem the groundwater recharge is very important, because the groundwater is the only source for the vegetation. The groundwater recharge is generated by the leakage of the irrigation and drainage canals, the Tarim River and during high waters from the flooded areas. The process of a plane infiltration should be analysed for the groundwater recharge. For this the water depth is needed, which can be calculated by a digital elevation model (DEM) and the water surface which can be analysed from the TSX data. With infield measurement of the 40 groundwater gauges and the surveyed soils the infiltration in the soil can be calibrated. The conclusion of these analyses is that an up-scaling for the groundwater recharge affected by flooding can be done along the whole Tarim River.
