SummaryThe present proposal aims at enhancing the current content of the Kalideos Reference Remote Sensing Databases through the collection of TerraSAR-X data on the existing sites, to make these data available to authorised scientists for research activities and the development of new applications.

Kalideos databases provide temporal series of optical and radar satellite images together with exogenous and ground truth data (maps, physical parameters, land occupation, etc.). Free access to their content is granted to scientists for research and educational purposes only, while the highest quality pre-processing (registration, ortho-rectification, absolute calibration, inter-calibration, etc.) is guaranteed. All the related information, as well as the data included, can be accessed through the Kalideos Web site (http://kalideos.cnes.fr).

The Kalideos concept, defined by CNES in 2000, has many benefits:
  • It ensures the assessment of methods on different situations, as well as the comparison of different methods over common datasets;
  • It federates the scientific community over key issues around dedicated areas of investigation following the concept of “living laboratories”;
  • It allows the transfer to remote sensing of research results from connected activities (vision, medical imagery).
Currently, CNES has developed four databases in this frame:
  • Adam, initially dedicated to investigating assimilation of remote sensing observations into crop growth models;
  • Isle-Reunion, the second one, focusing on the Reunion island, a volcanic and highly contrasted territory in the Indian Ocean, with extreme variety of micro-climates and landscapes;
  • Littoral, covering the Arcachon basin on the French Atlantic coast, which has been made available to the scientific community dealing with coastal monitoring and environmental applications;
  • OSR MiPy, the last one, dedicated to a piedmont plain area of the south-west of France to support Earth observation based research activities in the field of agriculture, water resource management or town and country planning.
CNES intends to complete the Littoral one with additional TerraSAR-X data requested in this proposal and to preprocess these data before putting them at the disposal of a research team in charge of thematic studies in the field of coastal management.

The detailed methodology depends on the considered thematic field as the image characteristics are not the same in all cases. In the case of the current studies focusing on coastal management, geocoding, calibration and comparison with field data will be at the heart of the proposed methodology.

The project deliverables will include annual synthesis reports prepared by CNES in the frame of the Kalideos programme, together with the scientific publications related to the use and analysis of the delivered TerraSAR-X data.

Basing upon the experience formerly acquired in the frame of Kalideos, CNES is quite confident in the capacity of innovation of the involved scientists and convinced that the new datasets provided by the TerraSAR-X system, combined with existing optical and SAR images series as well as ground data, will help them to improve significantly their current research programs.

No external funding is required to support the activities planned in the frame of this project. CNES has already supported the Kalideos programme for several years and intends to keep the same strategy as it is in line with the implementation of the GMES programme and the corresponding services. From their side, the scientists acting as co-investigators are also involved in applied research programmes which will help them in the achievement of her their task.
