TitleSAR-based methods for natural hazards and humanitarian crisis situations

SummaryThe aim of the proposal is to develop new and enhance existing methods on different natural disaster types and humanitarian crisis situations in order to improve the benefit of high resolution SAR systems to the crisis response and humanitarian relief community as well as the involved scientific community. The development of applications for disaster and humanitarian crisis situations requires a detailed assessment and improvement of methodologies that account for the advanced technical characteristics of the system. Our activities will contribute to these critical tasks through the establishment of dedicated processing workflows and strategies which are targeted towards an operational use of TerraSAR-X for crisis mapping, disaster response and the support of humanitarian aid activities. From a methodological point of view, the proposed work will also further expand on previous methodological work performed in the framework of MTH0303 covering four different crisis domains: Water- and oil-related disasters (mainly flood situation and oil-spills), seismic/geogenic disasters (mainly volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and landslides), fire-related disasters (mainly vegetation fires) and human-induced crisis features. Details of the methodological work proposed in each crisis application domain are outlined separately in the detailed description section of this proposal. The novel classification and change-detection techniques proposed in this proposal will allow an improved utilization of TerraSAR-X data in a rapid mapping environment and therefore foster the role of TerraSAR-X data in the field of disaster management and crisis response.
