SummaryThe underwater topography fields in costal areas can be obtained by using TerraSAR-X data to investigate refraction of long wave due to topography influence. The data from TerraSAR-X with high resolution up to 1m allows rendering the individual ocean waves; the bathymetry is reflected by long swell wave shortening governed by underwater structures in shallow areas, thus the underwater depth can be derived using the dispersion relation from observed swell properties. The method covers the areas between 100m and 10m water depths depending on sea state and acquisition quality. These new imaging techniques provide a platform to map shallow marine bathymetry over a broad area. To obtain the topography the knowledge about sea state and wind are required. Thus, the algorithms to retrieve the latest are co-developed.
