High resolution SAR Interferometry for monitoring the Rio-Antirio Bridge
(Western Greece) : a case study in the frame of Terrafirma-X project.

The proposal part of the Terrafirma-X ESA's GMES project is focused on
the application of Differential SAR Interferometry (DInSAR) and
especially the Permanent /or Persistent Scatterers (PSI) technique,
exploiting the very high resolution TerraSAR-X data, to measure
displacements along the Rio-Antirio bridge.
The use of DInSAR techniques to detect and measure the surface
movements is nowadays a very common issue. DInSAR has been
applied to C-Band and L-Band SAR systems leading to reliable results
since1992. The novelty is now the very high resolution data, the
capability to potentially measure very short displacements thanks to the
X-Band SAR, the availability of a large number of images in a short time
This proposal aims at testing a regular and continuous deformation
monitoring over the structure itself and the surrounding area using
advanced interferometric techniques (IPTA method) and thus assessing
the stability of the structure. Rio-Antirio suspension bridge is one of the
most important and impressive projects in Europe. As pilot application
the new bridge Rio-Antirio as an important infrastructure and its
environment shall be monitored. It is the longest cable stayed bridge in
world of 2.250 m. It is located in the northwest edge of Peloponnese
facilitating the communication and transportation between Greece and
the Western Europe through the Patra’s harbor. The area of the strait
presents a combination of hazards like absence of stiff seabed, strong
seismic activity, tectonic movements etc, which make the area of great
ground deformation susceptibility and the bridge an element in risk.
