SummaryOBJECTIVES The main objective of this project is the generation of volume maps of dumped waste for user-defined areas of interest and time samples. The project is conceived to be a proof of concept for basing a methodology that may be operational at mid-term and may provide support for the verification of law compliance.Catalonian authorities define the user segment who are in duty to monitor waste dumping among all the official facilities. This implies to control all the activities of the companies managing waste dumpsites. By law, these companies are bound to pay taxes according to the dumped tones. So, an efficient approach for checking the reports is mandatory for properly managing the resources. In-situ measurements is the method currently being used, but it is expensive, less flexible and highly dependent on companiesí collaboration. Other alternatives are being explored and remote sensing, specifically SAR, has emerged to be the most balanced solution. It permits a periodic monitoring of large areas with resolutions close to the meter and all-weather 24-hour coverage. Therefore, user feedback is an important element in this project. On the one hand, accurate ground-truth will be available thanks to in-situ altimetry measurements. On the other hand, users can provide physical sense to what measured. This means to put the inferred values into context for retrieving the layers of information most useful for them. SCIENTIFIC ISSUES The main scientific concern of this project is to try to obtain series of interferograms for areas where decorrelation is expected to be noticeable. Once available, volume maps of dumped waste can be easily retrieved. Dumpsites are dynamic areas changing their morphology in a relatively short term. Each work day, the garbage is dumped and compacted in thin layers covering the whole active area. In this context, the stability of the reflectivity information is expected to be limited. This characteristic will affect the stability of the interferometric phase and decorrelation.Processing method is based on classical InSAR processing with two variants: 1) the exploitation of master / slave pairs and/or 2) the usage of stacks of images. This chain is expected to be fed with repeat-pass VHR TerraSARX images and, if possible, single-pass TandemX data. For the first option, the reduced level of speckle noise and the high stability of phase information is beneficious for the overall system performance. For the second one, single-pass operations are the most recommended option, although the recent launch of this satellite, which is into the commissioning phase, is putting data availability at risk. DATA ACQUISITION PLAN Time samples: The current project comprises three time samples: June, September and December. So, two volume maps can be generated provided that the interferometric information in the dumpsites has good quality for all the time samples. These time samples have been selected according to user recommendations and their experience on dumpsites dynamics. Location: The area of interest is the largest dumpsite in Catalonia. Center coordinates are: X=436856 m, Y=4627421 m, fuse 30 UTM, with a radius no larger than 10 km. Tentative images: For sake of simplicity, images should be acquired with the same observation geometry. Stripmap geometry with high incidence is initially envisaged. A tentative acquisition plan could be 3/4 images around June 3/4 images around September 3/4 images around December With these data, different interferograms will be generated. Besides the two kernel volume maps, some more will be additionally obtained in order to provide an historic profile of dumped waste volume. If the option of Tandem-X is feasible, the acquisition plan would reduce to a pair of TerraSAR-X / TandemX images for each date of interest DELIVERABLES Progress report after second interferogram date Final report at the end of the project
