SummaryThe study will focus on the development and and calibration of a method to extrat urban footprints reliably from TerraSAR-X data. The existing approachuses the speckle characteristics of TerraSAR-X databased on the estimation of the local coeeficient of variation and the fading texture of the whole scene.The basic concept is to extract urban features as seed points, which are represeneted by bright point scatterers (corner reflectors) for the urban footprint classification.The urban seeds depict especially the reflection information of vertical structures. To derive the urban footprint, analysis techniques are used to densify and gerneralize the detected urban seeds. The overall goal of the study is to systematically test and calibrate the algorithm with respect to different cultural and geographical locations, and thus different urban structures around the globe. In addition we will test and develop methods for quantifiaction of the urban footprint using landscape metrics or gradient analysis. With it, the land-cover results get a value-adding for objective city comparisons or temporal compariosns for one city using change detection methods. We also intend to develop methods for multi-sensoral change detection using TSX-data and Landsat imagery for long-time monitoring of urban sprawl. We also try to relate the population distribution spatially to the urban footprint. This assessment methods intends to correlate adminsitrative knowledge of population in cities with the sptial characteristics of the landscape configuration.
