TitleMonitoring forest recovery after fire and biomass estimation in a Mediterranean Island using SAR and optical data

SummaryThe aim of the proposed project is to estimate the biomass of mature and regenerating forests and to monitor the forest recovery after fire in a Mediterranean Island using SAR and optical data. In the case of the island of Thasos, which is the proposed study area, three large fires between 1985 and 1989 and a smaller fire in 2000 resulted in the loss of about 21,000 ha of forest an area representing more than half the size of the island. Today, the forest has a spatial extent of about 2000 ha only, mainly in the northern and eastern parts of the island. For the aforementioned reasons, Thasos is the ideal site for this work given the size of the burned areas and the time interval since the last large fire. Specific objectives of the project are: (1) investigate the potential of integrating multi-temporal SAR and multi-temporal optical data for (a) monitoring forest recovery in burned areas 25 years after the fire events, (b) estimating the biomass of mature and regenerating forests and (2) investigate the potential of TerraSAR-X images for estimating forest biomass in a Mediterranean ecosystem. Multi-temporal SAR (ERS1&2, ENVISAT ASAR, ALOS PALSAR) and multi-temporal optical data (SPOT, Landsat) have been acquired in order to support the investigation. TerraSAR-X images and in particular, Stripmap and Spotlight modes acquired in different incidence angles and polarisation combinations are expected to provide useful information for estimating the biomass of mature and regenerating forests. The analysis will include segmentations of (1) the image products resulted from the integration of SAR and optical data and (2) the TerraSAR-X images. Subsequently, relationships between the different attributes of the segments (spectral statistics, shape information and texture) and biomass measurements extracted from field data and forest inventories will be studied. The influence of the different incidence angles and polarisation combinations of the TerraSAR-X images on the estimation of the biomass will be investigated. Research funding will be provided by investigators’ institutes.
