SummaryThe proposal is framed in the context of a 7-FP project named “Integrated System for Transport Infrastructures surveillance and Monitoring by Electromagnetic Sensing” (ISTIMES) whose aim is to design, assess and promote an ICT-based system inorder to achieve the critical transport infrastructures more reliable and safe. Repeat-pass DInSAR and, more specifically, its evolution to Persistent Scatterer Interferometry, (PSI) which allows the accurate localization of ground targets and the monitoring of possible displacements up to a mm/year order accuracy, has been the breakthrough for the application of SAR in the risk monitoring. Hence Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has been selected among the different sensors that should be integrated in the ISTIMES system for an integrated monitoring of transportation infrastructures. With respectto the other SAR sensors, especially the classical medium resolution satellites(f.i., ENVISAT), thanks to the combination of high spatial resolution (which decreases the effect of the clutter) and the small revisiting time, TerraSAR-X provides unique characteristics for the monitoring of urban area, as well as of man made structures in general. Recent results on monitoring such a scenario has clearly shown the impressive effects of these unique features.The proposal aims to test the possibility to use TerraSAR-X data within the ISTIMES project with reference to two bridges. It will be first tested the application of standard differential interferometric SAR processing that combine multiple acquisitions to accurately localize and monitor the scatterers on the ground. Furthermore it will be investigated the use of the advanced technique base on differential-tomography also known as 4D (space velocity) imaging. This technique is the recent extension of PSI in the context of coherent combination of SAR data: allows increasing the monitoring performances on scenarios that are characterized by vertical structuring of the ground targets. Finally, it will be investigated the possibility to integrate the TerraSAR-X retrieved information of monitoring of displacements of with those acquired by other sensors characterized by different temporal and spatial scales. In particular, in addition to SAR, ISTIMES consider the use of Hyperspectral spectroscopy (HyS); Distributed Optic Fiber sensors (DOF); Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT); Electrical Capacity Tomography (ECT); Ground Penetrating Radar systems (GPR); Infrared Thermography (IRT); Optical Displacement Monitoring (ODM) and Groundbased systems for displacement monitoring (GB-SAR).
