SummaryThe deformation monitoringin Cultural World Heritage sites will be a significant tool in interpreting thepotential causes that threaten the sustainability of the site as well as itsimportant monuments. The primary scientific objective is to obtainhigh-resolution (3m StripMap and 1-2 m Spotlight and/or High-ResolutionSpotlight), repeat pass TerraSAR-X SLC data in archive for measuring thespatial-temporal evolution of ground displacement in several selected WorldHeritage sites and/or tourism zones, including Cultural World Heritage sites ofAncient City of Pingyao, Pompeii, Great Wall (Beijing section) and SummerPalace and another Dadonghai tourism zone. The X-band observations will also beintegrated and compared with the results derived from C/L-band Envisat ASAR andPALSAR-1 as well as other ground-based measurements (e.g. GPS) that will be obtainedin the field campaigns when the project is on-going. The parameters of motions(structural instability of monuments, large-scale displacement in the entiresite) in spatial-temporal domain that will measured and monitored in thisproject will help to the smart management and sustainability of heritage sites.
