TitleMonitoring Seawall Deformation in Shanghai with TerraSAR-X

The test area covers the coastal area east of Shanghai, from Pudong International Airport to the Luchao Harbor, which is located along the coastline of the East China Sea and Hangzhou Bay. Four main steps will be carried out:

  • PS-InSAR techniques will be applied to generate a displacement velocity map.
  • Using an improved DEM generated from TanDEM-X CoSSC data of the area near Luchao Harbor, it will be possibe to improve the surface motion estimations in this part of the test area.
  • We will compare the PS-InSAR results with the leveling data from the Shanghai Geological Survey. To do this, we will first do a linear normalization along the seawall direction. Then, we will compare the trend of the PS-InSAR result and the leveling result and get a quantitative analysis of both results. Finally, the driving forces of the seawall deformation will be analyzed.
  • TerraSAR-X results will be cross-validated with C-band ENVISAT ASAR and L-band ALOS PALSAR results.
  • Based on the analysis and the cross-validation, strategies for combined analysis are tested. In preliminary results, we found that L-band PALSAR data gives a good overview of the deformation patterns and provides better results in the marsh area nearby the seawalls. However, the deformation velocity estimation seems to be less precise than the ASAR C-band data. Nevertheless, a joint interpretation could offer the best of all bands.
