SummaryGlaciers in the Karakoram and Pamir Ranges in Central Asia currently show stable or even positive mass balance in contrast to other glacier regions worldwide. While this exceptional behavior of the Karakoram glaciers is well known, the situation in the Pamir is less clear.
The aim of this project is to map and characterise glaciers in both mountain Ranges using the new wide coverage capability of TerraSAR-X. The glacierised area as a whole shall be surveyed with respect to glacier boundaries and glacier zones. Special emphasis will be put on debris-covered glaciers. Additionally, detailed studies of selected sample glaciers (e. g. Fedchenko Glacier in the Pamir and Baltoro in the Karakoram) will be conducted. Ice flow velocities will be mapped to compare them with earlier field and satellite data. Wide ScanSAR data will be used in combination with ScanSAR and Stripmap data. Funding is provided by institutional funds of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the Humanities.
